Over the years I’ve attended many Southlake annual meetings, but this year will be my first as your President. I definitely feel the responsibility and want to help make a difference for our great development. I also can predict at least 2 questions/comments that will come from you “what are you doing to increase our home values?” and “when are we getting sidewalks?”. Our Board of Directors understands so in response we’ve developed a five year plan for Southlake that we have already begun implementing. Here’s the Plan.
(1) Improve Communications: This is 2019 and the rest of Hoover (and the world) communicates electronically. Until now Southlake has used the US Mail and pieces of paper stuffed in mailboxes. INTRODUCING the new Southlake Residential Association website. Go to www.southlakehoover.com to find it. We have just begun but in the future, this will be primary way to communicate and discuss all things Southlake.
(2) Develop a Southlake “Parade of Homes”: If you have seen all the development around Trace Crossings and the Hoover Met we’re definitely not feeling much love from the City of Hoover and the greater Birmingham area. While Southlake already has what developers are trying to build new around town (a variety of home styles, easy access to expressways, retail/restaurants and Hoover Schools), we don’t think the rest of Birmingham knows this. The Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders wants to develop a “Remodelers Parade” similar to their existing “Parade of Homes” promotion. Our Board intends to offer Southlake as the first community to adopt this promotion.
(3) Make Southlake a Walkable/Bikeable Community: The City of Hoover is nearing completion of 2040 Plan for the community. You can see the latest draft at https://futurehoover.com/comprehensive-plan/ Looking closely at the comprehensive plan and the attached documents you see a lot of plans for other parts of Hoover but none for Southlake except in the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan that lists a low priority 1.5 mile combination bike and walking trail on Southlake Parkway. Also, there’s multiple mentions of extension of the Cahaba River Greenway from Riverchase to the Caldwell Mill area. That route will touch Southlake at multiple points. Hoover City Planner, Mac Martin tells us the way to move Southlake projects higher on the priority list is for our Association to meet with the City Council and propose a partnership to develop walking/bike paths on Southlake Parkway. Our Board wants to do this with the support of the community.
(4) Update the Southlake Brand: In cooperation with the Southlake Business Association and other Southlake stake holders update our logo, neighborhood signs and other common facilities to present a modern, inviting image for Southlake. This is a great place to live and we want everyone in the Birmingham area to recognize that.
